If you ordered a Weblite package for a domain name you already own and did not transfer it to Weblite, your domain stays with your current registrar. Your Weblite account is ready, but the domain needs to be pointed to Weblite from your registrar's DNS settings.
Once connected, your website will be available at www.mydomain.com. We also recommend redirecting mydomain.com (without www) to it, so visitors who type your domain either way reach your site.
Before You Start
You will need:
- Access to your registrar's control panel (the company where you bought the domain, such as GoDaddy or Namecheap).
- The Weblite IP address:
167.172.162.101
Configure DNS Settings
You point your domain to Weblite by creating an A record in the domain's DNS settings at your registrar.
-
Log in to your registrar's control panel and open the DNS settings for your domain.
This section is usually called DNS, DNS Management, DNS Zone, or Advanced DNS.
-
Create an A record for
wwwpointing to the Weblite IP address:Type Host / Name Value / Points to A www167.172.162.101 -
Remove any conflicting records.
Before saving, delete existing records for
wwwthat point your domain somewhere else:- Any other
Arecord forwww. - A
CNAMErecord forwww. It cannot coexist with an A record. - Any
AAAArecord forwww.
Leaving these in place can send visitors to your old website.
- Any other
-
Save your changes.
-
Redirect your root domain to
www(recommended).Weblite does not redirect
mydomain.comtowww.mydomain.comautomatically, so you need to set this up at your registrar. Look for a section called Domain Forwarding, URL Redirect, or similar, and forwardmydomain.comtohttps://www.mydomain.com. If you are asked to choose a redirect type, select Permanent (301). -
Wait for the change to take effect. It usually takes a few minutes to a few hours, and in rare cases up to 48 hours, for your domain to start showing your Weblite site.
Weblite issues the SSL certificate for your domain automatically shortly after it starts pointing to Weblite, so no action is needed on your side.
Note: Do not change your domain's nameservers, and do not edit or delete MX or TXT records. These control your email, and leaving them alone keeps your email working as before.
Not Sure How to Do This at Your Registrar?
Copy the text below, fill in your details, and send it to your registrar's support team:
I built a website using Weblite and would like to use
<your domain name>with it. I need to create an A record for "www" pointing to167.172.162.101. I also need my root domain (<your domain name>) to be permanently forwarded (301 redirect) tohttps://www.<your domain name>.I want to keep managing and renewing my domain with you. I am not requesting a domain transfer, and I do not want to change the domain's nameservers.
Thanks!
Troubleshooting
My domain still shows the old website.
DNS changes can take time to spread, and your browser may be holding on to the old version. Wait a few hours, then try again in a private browsing window. Also confirm you removed the old records in step 3. If only mydomain.com (without www) shows the old site, check that forwarding is set up as described in step 5 and that no old @ records remain.
My domain shows an error page or does not load.
Check that the www record points exactly to 167.172.162.101 and that no conflicting records remain. If everything is correct and 48 hours have passed, contact Technical Support.
mydomain.com does not redirect to www.mydomain.com.
Check that domain forwarding is enabled for your root domain at your registrar, that it forwards to https://www.mydomain.com, and that no other @ records point elsewhere. Visitors can always reach your site directly at www.mydomain.com.
My browser says the site is "Not Secure."
The SSL certificate is issued automatically shortly after your domain starts pointing to Weblite. If the warning is still there 24 hours after you saved your DNS changes, contact Technical Support.
